How To Make a Video for Bonnie 'Prince' Billy
Written by Mike Aho
Thursday, 14 February 2008 04:37
Mike Aho shows you how he did it for his song I Called You Back.
This project came about after doing an animated video for Jennifer Herrema and RTX. She is a long-time friend of Will Oldham and passed the word along that I was interested in doing something with him. I asked him if he wanted to do a video for 'I called you back' off of 'The Letting Go' because it is my favorite song on that record. They just released a live album called, 'Wilding in the West', so he wanted me to use that version of 'I Called You Back' instead of the studio version.

I don't really remember how I came up with the concept for the animation. I really liked the idea of someone going to a house tucked away in the country, building a small house inside and watching a film of some sort. All the images are meant to convey the idea of escapism and I guess the loom of our eventual death. As I was doing the drawings I decided that the stranger and more random the world that the dog walked through was; the more it would be an analogy for life and it's chance happenings, disasters and unexpected happiness.

I don't know if all of these ideas come through, but that's what was intended.

I started by building this little set out of the box from a case of Charles Shaw wine. Cheap wine is delicious and I'm finding out that my grandpa was right when he said 'the more I drink . . . the thirstier I get' (I just like that saying). At this point I was contemplating doing all of the drawings, cutting them out and doing stop-frame animation, but decided the house-building process would be easier to convey if it was animated with key-frames in After Affects. I took some photos of this set and used them for all of the shots inside the house.

After I built the little set and sprinkled some dirt and sticks in there, I began the long process of sketching and inking all of the drawings that would eventually be cut up in Photoshop for animating in After Affects.

I originally wanted to complete all of the drawings before doing any computer work, but was too anxious to see it how it was going to look so I went in intervals-couple days drawing, couple days working on the computer.

Then I got to break away for a night and hang out with my homies Mel and Travis in Echo Park.

I worked on this portrait of Bonnie that night and they helped me with some kind critiquing, though I still don't know why Travis had to take all his clothes off to show me how to draw a Bonnie's face with more 'determination'.

---------------

After all the drawings were finished for the first act, I began to really dig into animating. I learned After Affects on my own, so I'm definitely not the person to be giving a tutorial on how to animate something, but I'll explain a little bit about how I animated the dog. I just thought of it as a puppet and broke apart the limbs at the major joints in Photoshop. (It helps to feather the cuts so you can't see the breaks as much once they are moving).

After that was done I watched my dog walk around a lot. The way dog's legs move is pretty weird and really hard to capture with this kind of crude animation.

Once the file is in After Affects and you can select the rotation points of each layer and move them accordingly by creating key-frames for start and stop points. It was pretty hard to get it to flow as well as I wanted it to. I'm not sure it ever really got there, but this is what I ended up with.

After the Dog animation was complete it was time to create the world he was walking through. I just kind of did this in a stream-of-consciousness kind of way; building each little scenario as it came into my head.

I cheated a little here and there by using some drawings that I had already done. This crowd flower is from a panel that I made for the Wilting Wonder show that Fudge, Sieben, Mel Kadel and myself had at Lab 101 last September.

These are some of the drawings

So are these

I wanted the dog scene stuff to have a bit of a puppet-show-set feeling to it, so I did most of the characters on pieces of cardboard that I cut into shapes first and then painted little faces and bodies on. I was really shooting for a Henry Darger inspired world, or at least my version of that.

Basically the whole process consisted of drawing, scanning, making Photoshop files that had all of the movable parts separated, bringing them into after effects and creating the shots. Each little scene was exported as it's own movie.

Then I brought them into after Final Cut to edit them together. This all could have been done in after effects, but I wanted the whole thing to have a grainy, film quality to it. So I chose to edit in Final Cut because it allows for a more natural editing flow and it's easier to see things as you are doing them. A lot of times in After Effects you have to export the movie to watch it in real-time and then go back to make changes-unless you have that super computer from war games.

While finishing up the Bonnie video and working on this blog; I received a little package from mr. sieben, filled with drawings and these little dudes. We are beginning a video for my music project called ((sounder)).

Here's what it's looking like so far.

I'm a huge Will Oldham fan so this was a pleasure to work on, and even more exciting was really dissecting the song and find ways to create analogies for the lyrics without them becoming too obvious or beating people over the head with anything too tangible.

I guess that's it for 'How to make a video for Bonnie 'Prince' Billy. The video is now live on the interweb, here on Fecal, Youtube and various music websites, so tell a friend to check it out. Additionally he asked me to do 3 tee shirt designs for him, so keep your eyes peeled for those.

Hope you enjoy.

Los Angeles based Alison Blickle who showed here in San Francisco at Eleanor Harwood last year (PHOTOS) recently showed new paintings in New York at Kravets Wehby Gallery. Lovely works.

Interview w/ Kevin Earl Taylor

We haven't been featuring many interviews as of late. Let's change that up as we check in with a few local San Francisco artists like Kevin Earl Taylor here whom we studio visited back in 2009 (PHOTOS & VIDEO). It's been awhile, Kevin...

Peter Gronquist @The Shooting Gallery

If you like guns and boobs, head on over to the Shooting Gallery; just don't expect the work to be all cheap ploys and hot chicks. With Make Stuff by Peter Gronquist (Portland) in the main space and Morgan Slade's Snake in the Eagle's Shadow in the project space, there is plenty spectacle to be had, but if you look just beyond it, you might actually get something out of the shows.

Jay Bo at Hamburg's Circle Culture

Berlin based Jay Bo recently held a solo show at Hamburg's Circle Culture featuring some of his most recent paintings. We lvoe his work.

NYCHOS @Fifty24SF

Fifty24SF opened Street Anatomy, a new solo show by Austrian artist Nychos a week ago last Friday night. He's been steadily filling our city with murals over the last year, with one downtown on Geary St. last summer, and new ones both in the Haight and in Oakland within the last few weeks, but it was really great to see his work up close and in such detail.

Gator Skater +video

Nate Milton emailed over this great short Gator Skater which is a follow-up to his Dog Skateboard he emailed to us back in 2011... Any relation to this Gator Skater?

BANDES DE PUB / STRIP BOX

In a filmmaker's thinking, we wish more videos were done in this style. Too much editing and music with a lacking in actual content. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

AJ Fosik in Tokyo at The Hellion Gallery

Matt Wagner recently emailed over some photos from The Hellion Gallery in Tokyo, who recently put together a show with AJ Fosik (Portland) called Beast From a Foreign Land. The gallery gave twelve of Fosik's sculptures to twelve Japanese artists (including Hiro Kurata who is currently showing in our group show Salt the Skies) to paint, burn, or build upon.

GOLD BLOOD, MAGIC WEIRDOS

Backwoods Gallery in Melbourne played host to a huge group exhibition a couple of weeks back, with "Gold Blood, Magic Weirdos" Curated by Melbourne artist Sean Morris. John Felix Arnold III on the Road to NYC

Well, John Felix Arnold III is at it again. This time, he and Carolyn LeBourgios packed an entire show into the back of a Prius and drove across the country to install it at Superchief Gallery in NYC. I met with him last week as he told me about the trip over delicious burritos at Taqueria Cancun (which is right across the street from FFDG and serves what I think is the best burrito in the city) as the self proclaimed "Only overweight artist in the game" spilled all the details.

FRENCH in Melbourne

London based illustrator FRENCH recently held a show of new works at the Melbourne based Mild Manners

Henry Gunderson at Ever Gold, SF

Ever Gold opened a new solo show by NYC based Henry Gunderson a couple Saturday nights ago and it was literally packed. So packed I couldn't actually see most of the art - but a big crowd doesn't seem like a problem. I got a good laugh at what I would call the 'cock climbing wall' as it was one of the few pieces I could see over the crowd. I haven't gotten a chance to go back and check it all out again, but I'm definitely going to as the paintings that I could get a peek at were really high quality and intruiguing. You should do the same.

Mario Wagner @Hashimoto

Mario Wagner (Berkeley) opened his new solo show A Glow that Transfers Creativity last Saturday night at Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco.

Serge Gay Jr. @Spoke Art

The paintings in the show are each influenced by a musician, ranging from Freddy Mercury, to Madonna, to A Tribe Called Quest and they are so stylistically consistent with each musician's persona that they read as a cohesive body of work with incredible variation. If you told me they were each painted by a different person, I would not hesitate to believe you and it's really great to see a solo show with so much variety. The show is fun, poppy, very well done, and absolutely worth a look and maybe even a listen.

NYCHOS Mural on Ashbury and Haight

NYCHOS completed this great new mural on the corner of Haight and Ashbury in San Francisco on Tuesday. Looks Amazing.

Sun Milk in Vienna

With rising rent in SF and knowing mostly other young artists without capitol, I desired a way to live rent free, have a space to do my craft, and get to see more of the world. Inspired by the many historical artists who have longed similar longings I discovered the beauty of artist residencies. Lilo runs Adhoc Collective in Vienna which not only has a fully equipped artists creative studio, but an indoor halfpipe, and private artist quarters. It was like a modern day castle or skate cathedral. It exists in almost a utopic state, totally free to those that apply and come with a real passion for both art and skateboarding

"How To Lose Yourself Completely" by Bryan Schnelle

I just wanted to share with you a piece I recently finished which took me 4 years to complete. Titled "How To Lose Yourself Completely (The September Issue)", it consists of a copy of the September 2007 issue of Vogue magazine (the issue they made the documentary about) with all faces masked with a sharpie, and everything else entirely whited out. 840 pages of fun. -Bryan Schnelle

The Marsh Barge - Traveling the Mississippi River from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico

For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to quit my job, move out of my house, leave everything and travel again. So on August 21, 2013 I pushed a canoe packed full of gear into the headwaters of the Mississippi River in Lake Itasca, Minnesota, along with four of my best friends. Exactly 100 days later, I arrived at a marina near the Gulf of Mexico in a sailboat.

I don't think at this point it needs to be written since the last update to Fecal Face was a long time ago, but...

I, John Trippe, have put this baby Fecal Face to bed. I'm now focusing my efforts on running ECommerce at DLX which I'm very excited about... I guess you can't take skateboarding out of a skateboarder.

It was a great 15 years, and most of that effort can still be found within the site. Click around. There's a lot of content to explore.

Hit me up if you have any ECommerce related questions. - trippe.io

I'm not sure how many people are lucky enough to have The San Francisco Giants 3 World Series trophies put on display at their work for the company's employees to enjoy during their lunch break, but that's what happened the other day at Deluxe. So great.

The Death of the Artist—and the Birth of the Creative Entrepreneur
Wednesday, 21 January 2015 10:34

When works of art become commodities and nothing else, when every endeavor becomes “creative” and everybody “a creative,” then art sinks back to craft and artists back to artisans—a word that, in its adjectival form, at least, is newly popular again. Artisanal pickles, artisanal poems: what’s the difference, after all? So “art” itself may disappear: art as Art, that old high thing. Which—unless, like me, you think we need a vessel for our inner life—is nothing much to mourn.

NYPD told to carry spray paint to cover graffiti
Wednesday, 21 May 2014 10:37

nyc_graffitiNYC --- A new graffiti abatement program put forth by the police commissioner has beat cops carrying cans of spray paint to fill in and cover graffiti artists work in an effort to clean up the city --> Many cops are thinking it's a waste of resources, but we're waiting to see someone make a project of it. Maybe instructions for the cops on where to fill-in?

The NYPD is arming its cops with cans of spray paint and giving them art-class-style lessons to tackle the scourge of urban graffiti, The Post has learned.

Shootings are on the rise across the city, but the directive from Police Headquarters is to hunt down street art and cover it with black, red and white spray paint, sources said... READ ON
