FFDG is pleased to present Los Angeles based painter Sylvia Ji in her first solo show with FFDG entitled "Interwoven" featuring new acrylic paintings on wood inspired by Mexican textile and female figurative elements. A limited edition print will be released at the opening and Sylvia will be present for signing. An opening reception is scheduled for Friday, July 12th (7-10pm). Beer and wine will be available. The show runs through August 10th.

For Sylvia Ji's new collection she's continued on her Day of the Dead narrative frequent in her paintings, while also expanding and incorporating traditional folk patterns in an effort to weave together the old and the new. These works are shaped by the illustrative aesthetic of mexican textiles, the intricate ornamentation of pottery and tile work, and a sensitivity to bold colors and harmonious symmetry. All works are acrylic on wood panels, evoking the fluid and organic elements represented to the viewer.

Ji's work encapsulates an alluring beauty that is both cutting edge and a nod to time-honored technique. Her paintings are symbolic reflections of herself, portraits of people she knows or nameless faces set in a landscape of fleeting and decaying beauty. Possessing an artistic voice as unique as the times we live in, Ji is at once contemplative, spiritual, enigmatic, and yet whimsically funny. Above all else, it is perhaps beauty that emerges as her defining characteristic, and her art reflects this: an extension of herself; a passionate appreciation of simple aesthetic pleasure fused with intimately complex subject matter.

Sylvia Ji was born in 1982, and raised in San Francisco, California, where she received her BFA at the Academy of Art University. Upon graduation, she relocated to Los Angeles in 2005 where she currently resides. Ji's work has been featured in numerous gallery exhibitions including White Walls, Thinkspace, Lineage Gallery, BLVD Gallery, and Art Basel's Art Fair Now. She has been profiled in publications such as Juxtapoz, Trace, and Mesh Magazine, and her painting 'Dona Dolorosa' graced the cover of the LA Weekly.

John Felix Arnold & SFMoMa's Windows
Written by Rachel Ralph
Friday, 21 June 2013 08:33

SAN FRANCISCO -- Now, after a life changing experience during his residency in Japan, the culmination of years of art making for John Felix Arnold III can be seen in the 147 Minna Street windows of the SFMoMA as part of the SFMoMa's Artists Gallery. This makes him the only artist currently showing at the physical location of the museum.

Words & Photos: Rachel Ralph - rachel(at)fecalface.com

Felix uses the windows to his full advantage, creating epic scenes in his world of Unstoppable Tomorrow. Complete with dirt scattered along the bottom of them, the works show his renewed love of process and soulful art making, as well as his technical and compositional skills on a grand, new scale. The details of his line work emerge from and hide behind clouds of polyurethane and wood stain on the 8 foot tall panels and while viewing them, you can really enter this world for yourself. Also his minimal use of found object, installation style framing is a direct conversation with his past, larger installation works, yet is subtle and refined enough to allow the viewer to be enveloped by the paintings themselves.

111 Minna held an opening reception for the work last Saturday, and the crowd created the perfect intimate environment complete with performances by Jaysonik, G.U.T.S. and Felix himself. The work will be up for the next three months and definitely deserve a look if you’re in the Bay Area this summer. You can view Felix's other works at his newly re-launched website www.felixthethirdrock.com.

Skaters out there, been watching the 6th series of the Battle At The Berrics? For you older(ish) skaters out there, shit has gotten nutty hasn't it? If you're not sure what we're referring to, check Koston V. Shane O'Neill. Wowzas. Most of us would be lucky to land a kickflip following a nollie flip... or even doing a 360 flip. Anywho...

This year's trophy (as seen below) was created by Tokyo-based artist Haroshi who does incredible wood work (see here).

"Battle At The Berrics" is the most watched game of S.K.A.T.E in the world, with top pros battling head to head, working their way through the brackets to become the Battle At The Berrics champion. The Tornados in Moore, OK by Justin Clemons
Written by Justin Clemons
Wednesday, 05 June 2013 10:16

I (Justin Clemons) had the opportunity to shoot for Save The Children in Moore, OK.

I got there the day after the tornado came through. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. My mind just could not grasp what my eyes were seeing. It was just too much to take in, too much to process. So, I did what comes naturally and took images. It sort of helped me separate from the chaos and helped me focus.

I was very sensitive in what I was shooting and the people in the frame. For the portraits I did, I would go up and talk with the families for a while and hear their story, which they were glad to tell. Then I asked permission to take some photos, in which all but 2 people said that they wouldn't mind at all. I wanted to show the devastation, but also the resilience of the people. I did hear some sad stories, but I was amazed to hear all of the miraculous stories. I constantly heard things like, "My family and I were in the hall with a mattress over us and when it was all over the only thing still standing was our hallway." and "my elderly grandmother just happened to be on the other side of town when the tornado demolished her home." It was an extremely sad sight to see, but to hear that only 24 people lost their lives in that town, truly is astonishing. Here is a little of what I saw and the amazing people I met.

Hyuro "In/Between" at ArtRebels
Written by Trippe
Tuesday, 04 June 2013 17:17

Hyuro from Valencia, Spain was recently in Copenhagen for the solo show "In/Between" at ArtRebels.

While she was there she completed a massive 271 metre long mural project in Orestad, Copenhagen which tells the story of a deer moving from light into obscurity and emerges again, changed, on the other side. In her words: "In the battle of opposites, nobody wins and nobody loses. It's just a cycle, just another one. A deer runs and disappears in the trees, the forest devouring it in its branches. You can't win the race against time. The night will come first and bring its darkness, but Copenhagen can sleep peacefully. The sun will rise again in the morning and the deer will continue along his way. Nature takes its course. Nature meets city meets nature; chaos meets order meets chaos; night meets day meets night."

Her solo show at ArtRebels runs through June 15th -- Photos by Henrik Haven

ARYZ's TL Mural and The Apple
Written by Trippe
Tuesday, 04 June 2013 09:55

Rachel Ralph spotted Barcelona-based ARYZ working on his mural in the TL a couple weeks back, and we forgot to share the pics. His show at Fifty24SF opened back in April.

Looks amazing, but what's the deal with the mural's metamorphosis? In the beginning phases she's holding a small figure in her hands, and with the mural's completion, she's holding an apple?... The completed mural is a women holding some fruit? Was the subject matter of her holding a man too edgy and had to be tamed? Was the original intent to be an apple all along? Notice her right hand changes angles to adjust for the apple? So many questions and so little interest.

That massive thing is 5 stories tall and located at the corner of Polk Street and Eddy Street. Look up next time in the Tenderloin, but watch out for the human shit at foot level.

An apple is held.

Or is it a figure she's holding?

I don't think at this point it needs to be written since the last update to Fecal Face was a long time ago, but...

I, John Trippe, have put this baby Fecal Face to bed. I'm now focusing my efforts on running ECommerce at DLX which I'm very excited about... I guess you can't take skateboarding out of a skateboarder.

It was a great 15 years, and most of that effort can still be found within the site. Click around. There's a lot of content to explore.

Hit me up if you have any ECommerce related questions. - trippe.io

The Death of the Artist—and the Birth of the Creative Entrepreneur
Wednesday, 21 January 2015 10:34

When works of art become commodities and nothing else, when every endeavor becomes “creative” and everybody “a creative,” then art sinks back to craft and artists back to artisans—a word that, in its adjectival form, at least, is newly popular again. Artisanal pickles, artisanal poems: what’s the difference, after all? So “art” itself may disappear: art as Art, that old high thing. Which—unless, like me, you think we need a vessel for our inner life—is nothing much to mourn.

Hard-working artisan, solitary genius, credentialed professional—the image of the artist has changed radically over the centuries. What if the latest model to emerge means the end of art as we have known it? --continue reading

NYPD told to carry spray paint to cover graffiti
Wednesday, 21 May 2014 10:37

nyc_graffitiNYC --- A new graffiti abatement program put forth by the police commissioner has beat cops carrying cans of spray paint to fill in and cover graffiti artists work in an effort to clean up the city --> Many cops are thinking it's a waste of resources, but we're waiting to see someone make a project of it. Maybe instructions for the cops on where to fill-in?

The NYPD is arming its cops with cans of spray paint and giving them art-class-style lessons to tackle the scourge of urban graffiti, The Post has learned.

Shootings are on the rise across the city, but the directive from Police Headquarters is to hunt down street art and cover it with black, red and white spray paint, sources said... READ ON

Alison Blickle @NYC's Kravets Wehby Gallery

Los Angeles based Alison Blickle who showed here in San Francisco at Eleanor Harwood last year (PHOTOS) recently showed new paintings in New York at Kravets Wehby Gallery. Lovely works.

Interview w/ Kevin Earl Taylor

We haven't been featuring many interviews as of late. Let's change that up as we check in with a few local San Francisco artists like Kevin Earl Taylor here whom we studio visited back in 2009 (PHOTOS & VIDEO). It's been awhile, Kevin...

Peter Gronquist @The Shooting Gallery

If you like guns and boobs, head on over to the Shooting Gallery; just don't expect the work to be all cheap ploys and hot chicks. With Make Stuff by Peter Gronquist (Portland) in the main space and Morgan Slade's Snake in the Eagle's Shadow in the project space, there is plenty spectacle to be had, but if you look just beyond it, you might actually get something out of the shows.

Jay Bo at Hamburg's Circle Culture

Berlin based Jay Bo recently held a solo show at Hamburg's Circle Culture featuring some of his most recent paintings. We lvoe his work.

NYCHOS @Fifty24SF

Fifty24SF opened Street Anatomy, a new solo show by Austrian artist Nychos a week ago last Friday night. He's been steadily filling our city with murals over the last year, with one downtown on Geary St. last summer, and new ones both in the Haight and in Oakland within the last few weeks, but it was really great to see his work up close and in such detail.

Gator Skater +video

Nate Milton emailed over this great short Gator Skater which is a follow-up to his Dog Skateboard he emailed to us back in 2011... Any relation to this Gator Skater?

AJ Fosik in Tokyo at The Hellion Gallery

Matt Wagner recently emailed over some photos from The Hellion Gallery in Tokyo, who recently put together a show with AJ Fosik (Portland) called Beast From a Foreign Land. The gallery gave twelve of Fosik's sculptures to twelve Japanese artists (including Hiro Kurata who is currently showing in our group show Salt the Skies) to paint, burn, or build upon.

GOLD BLOOD, MAGIC WEIRDOS

Backwoods Gallery in Melbourne played host to a huge group exhibition a couple of weeks back, with "Gold Blood, Magic Weirdos" Curated by Melbourne artist Sean Morris. Gold Blood brought together 25 talented painters, illustrators and comic artists from Australia, the US, Singapore, England, France and Spain - and marked the end of the Magic Weirdos trilogy, following shows in Perth in 2012 and London in 2013.

Jeremy Fish at LA's Mark Moore Gallery

San Francisco based Fecal Pal Jeremy Fish opened his latest solo show Hunting Trophies at LA's Mark Moore Gallery last week to massive crowds and cabin walls lined with imagery pertaining to modern conquest and obsession.

John Felix Arnold III on the Road to NYC

Well, John Felix Arnold III is at it again. This time, he and Carolyn LeBourgios packed an entire show into the back of a Prius and drove across the country to install it at Superchief Gallery in NYC. I met with him last week as he told me about the trip over delicious burritos at Taqueria Cancun (which is right across the street from FFDG and serves what I think is the best burrito in the city) as the self proclaimed "Only overweight artist in the game" spilled all the details.

FRENCH in Melbourne

London based illustrator FRENCH recently held a show of new works at the Melbourne based Mild Manners

Henry Gunderson at Ever Gold, SF

Ever Gold opened a new solo show by NYC based Henry Gunderson a couple Saturday nights ago and it was literally packed. So packed I couldn't actually see most of the art - but a big crowd doesn't seem like a problem. I got a good laugh at what I would call the 'cock climbing wall' as it was one of the few pieces I could see over the crowd. I haven't gotten a chance to go back and check it all out again, but I'm definitely going to as the paintings that I could get a peek at were really high quality and intruiguing. You should do the same.

Mario Wagner @Hashimoto

Mario Wagner (Berkeley) opened his new solo show A Glow that Transfers Creativity last Saturday night at Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco.

Serge Gay Jr. @Spoke Art

The paintings in the show are each influenced by a musician, ranging from Freddy Mercury, to Madonna, to A Tribe Called Quest and they are so stylistically consistent with each musician's persona that they read as a cohesive body of work with incredible variation. If you told me they were each painted by a different person, I would not hesitate to believe you and it's really great to see a solo show with so much variety. The show is fun, poppy, very well done, and absolutely worth a look and maybe even a listen.

NYCHOS Mural on Ashbury and Haight

NYCHOS completed this great new mural on the corner of Haight and Ashbury in San Francisco on Tuesday. Looks Amazing.

Sun Milk in Vienna

With rising rent in SF and knowing mostly other young artists without capitol, I desired a way to live rent free, have a space to do my craft, and get to see more of the world. Inspired by the many historical artists who have longed similar longings I discovered the beauty of artist residencies. Lilo runs Adhoc Collective in Vienna which not only has a fully equipped artists creative studio, but an indoor halfpipe, and private artist quarters. It was like a modern day castle or skate cathedral. It exists in almost a utopic state, totally free to those that apply and come with a real passion for both art and skateboarding

"How To Lose Yourself Completely" by Bryan Schnelle

I just wanted to share with you a piece I recently finished which took me 4 years to complete. Titled "How To Lose Yourself Completely (The September Issue)", it consists of a copy of the September 2007 issue of Vogue magazine (the issue they made the documentary about) with all faces masked with a sharpie, and everything else entirely whited out. 840 pages of fun. -Bryan Schnelle
