It's not everyday that during an art walk you get two sick murals, let alone one. And
that just so happened to occur at the 2012 Venice Art Walk. Only a few blocks awat
from one another, the artists Jesse Hazelip and Aaron Axelrod were working on
their individual walls.

Jesse flew out from his new home in New York to paint and put up one of the most
ginormous wheat-pastes I've ever seen on what was dubbed the RED FORT of
Venice Beach. The piece features his epic renderings of a warthog and bull in front of
gorgeous red and blue lettering. And then inside the building was a pop-up exhibit
featuring his original ball-point sketch – which is so masterfully done that it's hard
to believe it was done.
And while Jesse had started his mural earlier on in the week, due to it's towering
scale, Aaron Axelrod was putting his entire body into the colors and motions of a
wall built specifically for him at the entrance of the auction portion of the event.
Within four hours he had gotten up two wheat-pastes, an energetic splattering of
paint, and a mannequin complete with a light-up halo. So, just as the night fell upon
the Earth, the piece lit up and sparked everyone's imaginations. -Daniel Rolnik

Pretty epic room at Au Vieux Panier hotel in Marseille, France by graffiti artist Tilt called "The Panic Room" which was very carefully split in two... Like the Artists' Rooms at Hotel Des Arts here in San Francisco, the Au Vieux Panier hotel features 5 rooms which they invite artists to adjorn yearly.

Remember Marty Machado's great feature he did here at Fecal Face called Life and Work on a Containership? Well, over the years he took a lot of video and has recently got around to putting together this 20 minute short below.
Marty is also a very talented painter, and his newest paintings are on display here in SF at Gallery Hijinks through May 26th for the show Too Far Gone. View the show here.
In this short documentary, I tried to answer some of the common questions that I usually get about shipping. The footage I took myself using fairly basic cameras that I could fit in my pocket while I was on the job as a deckhand. The story follows me on my six month journey around the world on a container ship which was on a run between New York and Singapore via the Suez Canal. Thanks for watching. -Martin

Logan Crable emailed us the other day with an offer to view his Blow Job series. Normally we don't get offers to view someone's porn project, but we quickly learned that the blowing is more in the literal sense as opposed to the pleasuring form.

Spoke Art here in SF opens the group show Synergy curated by LA's Thinkspace this Thursday, May 3rd (6-10pm) featuring works by a slew of artists that Thinkspace works with. Spoke Art sent us a taste for you to sample.
Spoke Art is located at 816 Sutter St near Union Square. --> Lots of openings on Thursday in that part of the city with the newish Lower Polk/ TL First Thursday Art Walk (White Walls, Spoke, Ever Gold, Heist, Popular Workshop etc.).

We had the pleasure of meeting Flavio Samelo when we were in Sao Paulo last summer (blog). He's a skateboarder/ photographer and talented artist. Here are some photos from some of his recent mural done in Rio de Janeiro.
Flavio Samelo submits goodness from his native Sao Paulo, Brazil and/ or from around all of South America for Fecal Face.
The people from Redley, invited me to make a mural on the facade of their Ipanema store in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The location is perfect for the type of work that I am developing. My current work is inspired by the optical studies of Isaac Newton, and how light refraction works, and as I am a photographer I really enjoy studying light. -Flavio Samelo

| Murals at Harry Wirtz Elementary
Last year, Eric Caruso a teacher at Harry Wirtz Elementary School (Paramount, CA, near LA) had an idea to invite some artists to paint some murals at the school because there wasn't an arts program for the kids. That brilliant idea resulted in some awesome murals by artists Seitaku Aoyama, Yusuke Hanai, Rich Jacobs, Tim Kerr and Albert Reyes.

| Daniel Chen @The Book and Job Gallery (SF)
The Book and Job Gallery (San Francisco) really stepped it up with the opening of Daniel Chen's loveBlast on May 4th. Complete with a doorman, piano player, old fashioneds, and some really nice paintings, I could hardly believe I was at the Book and Job. The paintings varied in size, and the show was balanced nicely between them, the spray-can work on the walls, and the smaller drawings displayed throughout. The kind notes Chen wrote on the walls are certain to brighten your day, and the rest of the work is definitely worth a look. It was a very classy evening and I hope they continue to intersperse shows like these into their schedule in the future

| Gary Baseman Interview
Gary Baseman's retrospective "The Door is Always Open" at the Skirball in LA opened recently to massive crowds in a huge celebratory opening party. The exhibition is so complex and personal, delving into Baseman's background, family history, and all the layers of prolific work that he has done over the years. After the opening festivities winded down, I caught up with Baseman for an interview. We discussed the underlying meaning to some of the components of the show and how it felt for him, coming from such an honest personal perspective in putting this massive show together.

Fertile Menace, a new show of Mark Mulroney's (NY) work opened at Ever Gold on May 4th and it's not one to be missed. It is intelligently hilarious, with jokes riffing off sex, Foucault, and the body, and while it makes you laugh it's also going to make you think.

| Michael Garlington & The Metaphysical Fundraiser at 111 Minna
Although I missed the opening of Northern-California photographer Michael Garlington's newest show, Constructed Realities, I was fortunate enough to see the work still up during the Metaphysical fundraiser a couple weeks back at 111 Minna. Metaphysical fundraiser, an auction to benefit Wayne Ernzer. --- The ghoulish photographs in their heavy, hand-made frames are reminiscent of photos from the old west, and the glass crucifixes, complete with fetuses and guns, emphasize the accumulated time within the works themselves. Whether you're looking at the frames, the photos, or both, this show deserves a visit, and a walk through the golden archway Garlington constructed around the front door.

| ARYZ at Fifty24SF
ARYZ (Spain) opened his newest gallery show at Fifty24SF last Friday and, if you live in the Bay Area, you need to go. This dude can obviously paint, and he doesn't need an entire building to show his impecable skill. The show has lots of small works on paper which contrast his highly-defined line work to his hard-edged painted objects. The contrast between the hard and soft was the most striking thing to me about his work, since I had never seen it in person before, and the washes blend with the thick paint seamlessly. The show also contains a larger work on canvas, a huge head suspended in the back of the room, and a big wood sculpture of a wolf figure. This diversity in such a small space was impressive, and those of us that went to the opening even got to meet the man in person. If you didn't make it out this weekend, check it out before May 31st when it closes and these works will be off to some very happy new homes.

Water McBeer is please to announce its latest exhibition "Precious" a solo exhibition by David Bayus (April 6 - May 4, 2013) -- David Bayus born 1982 holds his BFA from the Savannah College of Art and his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. David lives and works in San Francisco and is a founding member of the basement collective. This will be his first exhibition with the world renown Water McBeer Gallery highlighting his most recent achievements with paint and digital media. David Bayus will be exhibiting 5 relatively large-scale mixed media works along with a collaborative object featuring Hungarian sculptor H.R KOONS.

| Hard Time Mini Mall @The Shooting Gallery
The Shooting Gallery handed over the reins to the Red Truck Gallery (a New Orleans based gallery) which curated their new show, Hard Time Mini Mall and opened the it on Saturday night. This is my favorite show (so far) in the Shooting Gallery's new space and was packed full of art, a mini bar, and cowhide rugs. The Red Truck Gallery chose works with clear craftsmanship and it was easy to see in Ian Berry's denim assemblages and Chris Roberts-Antieau's awesome quilts. The space was completely packed, making it hard to see each piece individually, but this show deserves a second trip anyway. I look forward to spending more time with the chandeliers, automatons, and paintings before the show comes down on May 4th.
