I live in Milwaukee, I'm 23. I'll be 24 in 3 hours. I received a bachelor's degree in painting from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. My website is www.hueycrowley.com.
I would say that "They are dirty-Disney colored paintings from a tingling, nintendo-influenced dimension." I would mention that they speak to some 70's warped, screwball, acid-shit. Ominous things have always attracted me, and they show up in my work often.
Some artists- Allison Schulnik, Jose Lerma, Kim Dorland, Chris Johanson, Matthew Barney, Christopher Wool, Carroll Dunham, Luis Galvez, Santiago Cucullu, Terence Koh, Basquiat, George Condo…and many more....
Musically-Salem, Juiceboxxx, Liars, Aids Wolf, The Coughs, MTV Riff Raff...
I like dollar burgers from the Irish Pub by my house. I get them with blue cheese and peppers.
Working late, because it's quiet and there are less distractions. I work by the side of my bed in an extremely small room, and I think it made my recent paintings more cramped. But I'm moving into a bigger room soon, so… yeah.
Weird opportunities are thrown my way often and I kind of just make it work somehow. My mom helps me pay my loans too. Thanks, mom.
Often I start out by working as stupidly as I possibly can just to get things moving. The image eventually presents itself to me, I just carry it along from confusion to completion. I don't really have a concrete concept that I usually go for, but my work always ends up with a lot of content.
Acrylic paint, spray paint, respirator, brushes from Walgreens.. most mediums... Also grapefruit juice and candy.
My birthday. My girlfriend got me a book and I want to know what it is.
Realistically- Pay off loans, get a place in NYC, fly out there often to party and hang out…..also buy a crappy house in my hometown and build a skatepark in the backyard and a music studio in an extra room...
Hang out with the Pook, sit on Brewer's hill and eat slutty cones from McDonalds. Paint a little, get some form of exercise. Experience something new and euphoric..
Probably Blackbird bar, or Jackpot gallery. Milwaukee has a lot of awesome secrets- rooftop pools, art galleries made by hobos in the woods, underground tunnels, cool bars with good Wisconsin beers, and a humble art scene with several awesome DIY galleries/ spaces. It also has pretty alright skate-spots if you're into that sort of thing.
Chelsea skateboards is a company I started up in September. Its named after a hoodrat from my hometown. The image that we're ultimately going towards is a witch eating Mcdonalds while dropping a deuce. Check out our website at www.chelseaskateboards.com. Please excuse the crappy myspace generated looking background for now.
I'm curating a show called "One Hit Wonders" featuring the work of 50-60 artists from all over Milwaukee. Opening is May 20th at 6PM @ Jackpot Gallery 825 E. Center St, Milwaukee, WI 53212. There will also be a beer bong.
