We met a young skater named Charles Martin, an interesting guy studying at SFAI, through our friend Henry Gunderson. Charles would stop in the gallery from time to time, and the last time he came through he told us he was off to NYC to study at Cooper Union where his brother also studys. Getting into Cooper Union is no small feat. They're one of the most selective schools in the U.S. Well known for their art and science programs, C.U. admits students based on merit alone and provides each with a full-tuition scholarship. A FREE top rate highly demanding education.
Charles Martin is now showing in the group show 11.11.11 running through Dec 17th at San Francisco's FFDG.
Age? Location? Website?
Twenty, New York City, I do not have a website.
Describe your work a little bit.
The things I make are a reflection of my ideas, coupled with a strong desire to make them tangible.
Our world is on my brain a lot; I like to think that if I'm conscious of what's going on that it will naturally filter into my work.
Most of my art is an investigation, sometimes about very specific content, and other work may strictly be about the medium.
I make work that references the past, and at the same time I like to read my imagery as futuristic. When I look at my paintings the first thing that comes to mind is making them, so in this way each becomes a mirror of the time in which they are created.
In a lot of my pictures I draw outer space, I feel that there is a strong connection between the universe and the mind. Both infinite in possibility and mass, I enjoy drawing from outside of the atmosphere because it allows me to explore.
Limitations exist with drawing from land, more recently I've been trying to make stuff that combines unbounded space with our flat world. Picture compositions that display an earth embodying characteristics of space, and then imagine the opposite.
Music heavy on your playlist these days?
A lot of hip hop, Jazz, Instrumentals, Nas Illmatic!
Nathan is curently showing in the group show 11.11.11 up now @FFDG here in San Francisco through Dec 17th. We've been interviewing the 10 artists participating in the show over the last couple weeks. Say hello to this talented Canada native.

Romulus and Remus": Rice paper overlay, ink and acrylic, on paper, 4ft x 4ft, 2011.
Describe your work a little bit.
My work depicts scenes from a dripping, glowing, shifting world were a cast of delinquent characters struggle to unearth a greater understanding of my personal mythology. Springing from past, present and future the narratives of my work are entangled and multilayered, destruction and creation often become indistinguishable as the characters constantly chase their goals in circles: their quest for personal clarity constantly unfulfilled.
Music heavy on your playlist these days?
70’s punk, 80’s hardcore, weird rock n’ roll, random originals.

Spotted this in a little shop on Clement St. the other day. Had to share... Might be good on some holiday turkey?
Speaking of holiday turkey, FFDG will be open today, Wednesday, but will be closed during the holiday/ shopping weekend. Enjoy some quality time with family and friends. Or go for a sail on the SF Bay.
Damn, free Blue Angel Vodka drinks, free mexican food from the El Tonayense truck, and, of course, great art can draw a healthy crowd. Thanks to the awesome BLKTOP Project featuring Tommy Guerrero, Ray Barbee, and Chuck Treece for playing the opening... and to everyone who came out including those who flew in for the fun night.

Viewing work by Mario Martinez (Mars-1)
The paintings and sci-fi model city in Martinez's solo show in the back room seemed enormous and awe-inspiring, engrossing the viewer in their intricate, astral landscapes. Between free tacos and the jazzy jam session by BLKTOP Project afterward, everyone went home happy. ~continue reading

Well, there was a fire in our building on the 27th of September that left FFDG homeless, but with the help with our friends at Park Life, we found a temporary space in the Inner Richmond while we figure out our permenant home situation.
In the last couple weeks we made a rough looking space look gallery like with a lot of work and much more white paint. Last Friday, Nov 11th, we opened two shows. Mario Marinez (Mars-1) in the larger back space and the group show 11.11.11 featuring young artists from the USA and beyond doing work that we're very excited about and who have been recently featured within Fecal Face. Here we present the group show 11.11.11.

Thanks to the BLKTOP Project featuring Tommy Guerrero, Ray Barbee, Chuck Treece and Matt Rodriguez for playing an amazing set until the cops showed up (ugh).
Also, special thanks to Blue Angel Vodka for providing wonderful drinks (bummer we mixed the great vodka with crappy OJ). Sorry to those who got there too late for the free food from El Tonayense. We went through $700 worth of food in an hour and a half. Damn those websites that list events with free food or drinks gobbling it up so fast.

We're now working on getting the images of the great works online as well as getting some pics from the evening too.

Hanging out with the wifey, reading, teaching, camping, BBQing, running, walking and playing records in my garage.
How would you describe your work to a stranger who's never seen it?
I make paintings, drawings, sculptures, prints and installations. Sometimes I paint figures and sometimes I create these clusters of faces or heads using textures, patterns and line work. The work can be illustrative and sometimes it's completely abstract. They usually nod their head and say, “Oh, ok.” But they usually have no idea what I'm talking about until I show them the work.
Upcoming projects/ shows?
11.11.11 @ Fecal Face & a few other group exhibitions throughout the rest of the year. Super secret magic plans for 2012.
What gives you the right?
Um, I dunno. I just make sure no ones looking and then I just go for it. I'll worry about the consequences later.

Age? Location? Website? And who do you think you are?
I am inspired by what can happen to someone who breaks free from any form of oppression, physical or mental. I think that I make my best work when I am recollecting on a time where I may have felt lost or lonely and have since recovered. I play off feelings of former isolation.

Updates at FFDG Wednesday, 02 November 2011 /// Written by Trippe
Update Thurs:Mike Midden Tweeted this AM- a lotta action at the old Fillmore space today. And included the image below. Wow, no joke on the action. They're gutting the space!
They're gutting our space on Fillmore due to the fire.
Also, stay tuned for awesome developments on the opening of our temp space at 248 Clement on Fri, Nov 11th. Music, food, booze, and, of course, great art from Mario Martinez (Mars-1) and from the group show 11.11.11.
Stopped by FFDG's Fillmore space yesterday to see construction workers tearing down walls down to the studs so that they can dry post fire/ water damage. Asked the Irish contractor what he thought of a time frame for repairs to be completed and didn't get a solid answer, but it doesn't look like any time soon, for sure.
Knowing it was a matter of time before the nice sink and faucet we installed disappeared, we ripped it from the wall and await to install it back on Fillmore St or wherever our permanent home ends up.
Rescued Trippe's birthday sink and faucet
Good news is that we open up FFDG's temporary gallery space at 248 Clement in a little over a week with a solo show from San Francisco's Mario Martinez (Mars-1) on 11.11.11 or better known as Friday, Nov 11 (6-9pm).

Age? Location? Website? And who do you think you are?
Still 20, Melbourne, Australia. flickr.com/bottomlesspoose. hamishi.com is incoming, I just need Kim to hurry up. I guess I'm an amalgamation of everything that's happened to me, y'know? I'm just a guy who makes stuff is all.
Describe your work a little bit.
Sure! but it's tough, to be general I try to catch the glistening balance of mapping something outside of me that is naive and omnipotent using an illustrative painterly style and maintaining hyper honesty while expressing what you wont know. Does that make me sound like a jerk? Okay little people quietly placed softly affecting each other. Who am I?
Music heavy on your playlist these days?
I've been listening to a lot of local pop stuff like Aleks and the Ramps, Milk Teddy, the Townhouses, Oscar + Martin, Megastick Fanfare, it's nice to be able to go see your favourite bands every few weeks for a couple of bucks. Then some Javelin, John Maus, Trouble Books, Cannibal Ox, KMD, Das Racist, Dan Deacon, King Khan and BBQ. I like listening to new music when I'm painting though, stops me from getting distracted. I also put on podcasts so I don't get lonely in the studio.
Favorite mediums to work within?
Gouache
Dream job other than artist?
Maybe yours? I'd really like to help all the people I believe work hard and make the stuff I love get validation and recognition. I wanted to become a fire engine, I've kind've outgrown that.

Age? Location? Website? And who do you think you are?
25. From Vancouver, Canada but currently living in Edinburgh Scotland. Artist.
Describe your work a little bit.
I use hard-edge geometric shapes and loose marks to articulate the relationship between natural and man-made structures. The result is an extraction or sample from the conglomeration of these opposite forms of environment.
Music heavy on your playlist these days?
No Gold, Brasstronaut, and Radiozero podcasts for the old home. Belle and Sebastian for the new home.
Favorite mediums to work within?
My paintings are mostly acrylic and spray paint, but recently I have been using wood and glass to experiment with sculpture and installation.
Dream job other than artist?
Island caretaker
When not creating work, you can be found doing...
Hanging out with my wife and exploring my new city.
How would you describe your work to a stranger who's never seen it?
A collision of gradients, geometric shapes, and lines that come together to create a new (usually floating) entity.
LOS ANGELES --- mark down Saturday, June 22nd on the calendar as New Image Art will be opening Tonight We Fight featuring works by John Malta, Pacolli, Mildred, Dillon Froelich, Eric McHenry, Teddy Kelly, Luke Pelletier, Sean Morris, Yarrow Slaps, Ben Jensen, Nathan Brown and Miles Jackson.
Tucker Nichols emailed over this Whole Foods poster (below right) which looks a lot like one of Corey Arnold's photos (bottom left). Coincidence? Where they inspired by Corey's photo? Did Corey actually shoot the photo? Who knows and Corey is fishing for salmon right now (like this), so we can't ask him to find out.
Yeah, bad tattoos are basically a bummer, right? But they're also pretty much a rite of passage for bored and disenfranchised-feeling teenagers the world over. At least it was for about 95% of the people I know. Going to a reputable tattoo shop and getting a wizard or unicorn drilled into your lower back is totally fine, but nothing really takes the place of sitting around with a bunch of friends and some beers, enthusiastically taking turns poking each others' arms full of bad ideas-which actually is fun at any age.

Organizers are now asking for donations and developing a vendor fee schedule to try and keep the party alive. ~continue reading

Wonder if our old emails with Banksy are worth a few thousand dollars. It seems everything the dude touches is worth a million dollars these days! Nutty and much deserved.
A disputed Banksy graffiti artwork removed from a gritty London neighbourhood has sold for approximately $1.1 million US at auction. The provocative Slave Labour (Bunting Boy) sold at a private auction held by concierge firm The Sincura Group at the London Film Museum on Sunday, according to Bloomberg news service. The spray-painted, stenciled work depicts a child labourer using an antique sewing machine to create a Union Jack bunting. -Continue reading
Daniel Cronin was hired to shoot photos for the ongoing feature series: the Road Trips USA: Pacific Coast... An interesting idea where the trip was live blogged/ tweeted/ Instagramed with people making suggestions for what to check out, and well, into FFDG they stopped.
Look ma, we made The Guardian U.K.
Come on, guys. Don't call San Francisco "San Fran".
SAN FRANCISCO --- Local painter Ian Kimmerly opened his newest show Continuous Wave at Dolby Chadwick on Thursday night, and these are some of the best paintings I've seen in a while.
This editor has been posting images from his life for the last 13 years. Cats, sailboats and living one's life in the city of San Francisco. Visual randomness.
Spoke Art opened The Black Robe on Thursday night, with the work of Barron Storey, Mike Dringenberg and Keita Morimoto, and was curated by Eidolon Fine Arts.
These days New York-native multimedia artist, Michael Alan, has been incredibly active artistically in the big city. Between staging hours-long Living Installations at the New Museum and other DIY spaces, exhibiting his drawings and paintings in group exhibitions and hosting an unusual solo show in the home of his mother, Alan proves that there is no rest for the wicked. I caught up with him recently to hear the latest, the backstory, and what's next.
Henrik Haven, who keeps us up to date in all that's Copenhagen, emailed over some photos from the Viborg International Billboard Painting Festival that's running throughout June. In this short installment he introduces us to the work of urban/graffiti artist and illustrator NYCHOS.
Kelly Tunstall, who's showing w/ Ferris Plock at FFDG this August 16th, recently finished some commissions for A16 in Oakland. Here's a little taste, and check out her last year's show at FFDG.
Brendan Monroe, whose show Melting Into the Floor runs through June 15th at LA's Richard Heller, creates these great wooden sculptures and featured a bunch in the show... He's often asked how he goes about making them and gives us at Fecal Face a little 'how to' on the process.
Mexico City based Curiot, whose sold out solo show Age of Omuktlans ran last March at FFDG, just finished this great mural entitled "El Retorno de Akhankutli" in Mexico. He recently completed one in Berlin too which we'll be posting in the coming week. The guy is very very talented in our eyes.
This made our day. Not only do we love pizza but we also love Henry Gunderson... So a board shapped like a hot slice designed by Henry Gunderson for The Good Company, well... this writer needs to go for a slice right now.
Wendell McShine (lives in Mexico City, from Trinidad) opened his newest show, Raccoon's Law, at Fifty24SF on Saturday night. ARYZ was a tough act to follow, but McShine held his own in the space... With a combination of a mural, a video, and both drawings and mixed-media works on paper, the diversity of this solo show was impressive. The Raccoon drawings were especially attractive as the way he executed them looked like they actually had fur coming off the page, and you can only imagine how soft it would be to touch. I was lucky to see his work in person through this show, and I hope to encounter more in the future.
Ingrid Wells just got her MFA from The San Francisco Art Institute and these oil paintings from her Honey Boo Boo's Amurrican Starquest were on display as part of the recent MFA exhibition... Ingrid Wells works and lives in San Francisco.
Henry Gunderson emailed over some photos from his recent group show with Andrew Luck, Jordan Bogash, and Mario Ayala "Out The Window" which ran at the Los Angeles based Prohibition Gallery.
I got there the day after the tornado came through. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. My mind just could not grasp what my eyes were seeing. It was just too much to take in, too much to process. So, I did what comes naturally and took images. It sort of helped me separate from the chaos and helped me focus.
Check out this, what could be, one of the longest murals ever created. Hyuro from Valencia, Spain was recently in Copenhagen for the solo show "In/Between" at ArtRebels.
Rachel Ralph spotted Barcelona-based ARYZ working on his mural in the TL a couple weeks back, and we forgot to share the pics. His show at Fifty24SF opened back in April.
Jeffrey Cheung emailed over some photos from a recent one night show he had at Terra Gallery/ event space. The May 19th show also featured live music by Oakland garage rockers Twin Steps and Coldtergeist.
Great solo show by LA based Alison Blickle (Born 1976) up now at San Francisco's Eleanor Harwood gallery. History of Magic Part 1... The Hermitage runs through June 15th 2013. -- 1295 Alabama St. Hours: Wed thru Sat (11-6pm)
Well, it looks like John Felix Arnold rocked Tokyo with his opening with Koutaro Ooyama at Spes Lab a few weeks back. Even a language barrier couldn't prevent the success of their collaboration. They invited everyone they met on trains, in cars, cafes, bars, restaurants, and people responded by attending, and bringing their families and friends as well.
Last Thursday evening, I was lucky enough to get invited to Nickelodeon's premiere party for their newest cartoon, Sanja & Craig, created by three awesome dudes - Andreas Trolf, Jim Dirschberger, and Jay Howell. Hosted at Tony's Salon with pizza provided by Pizzanistas, the premiere party was filled with libations and celebrations, even a break-dance battle broke out. Congrats to everyone who worked on the show, and especially Trolf, Jim, and Jay who all have been working tirelessly on it. Sanja & Craig premiered Saturday 10:30 am 11 am on Nickelodeon. You can watch Sanjay and Craig Episode 1: Brett Venom on hulu. and read about how the guys came up with it in this interview with The LA Times. Now, here's some photos from the premiere.
Drawing Stories is a new series from our buddy Travis Millard. Grab a cup of hot coco, get your slippers on and enjoy some time with your uncle Millard.
Los Angeles Christofer Chin (Tofer) emailed over some install shots of his current show Ar running in NYC at Lu Magnus through June 29th. Simple/ clean and continuing his op artstyle Tofer Chin features new paintings, photographs, and sculpture continuing his exploration of geologically and architecturally inspired Minimalist forms.
