As the group show The Diamond Sea approaches the opening this Saturday, Oct 13th (6-9pm) @FFDG in San Francisco, we wanted to introduce, or in most cases "reintroduce" you to the artists who will be participating.
Born in 1988, Winnie Truong lives and works in Toronto and is a recent graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design's drawing and painting program. Winnie is the recipient of numerous awards, including W.O. Forsythe award, the 401 Richmond Career Launcher prize and the BMO 1st! Art Award for Ontario, which was shown at Mocca last fall. This past year Truong has shown in New York at Mulherin Pollard Projects and was also featured at VOLTA , NY. She is in the collection of The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Overland Park, Kansas

What are you really excited about right now?
I am very excited to be a part of The Diamond Sea and among such an amazing artist roster!
I am also very, very excited for my solo show Double Twist. It opens the same night as The Diamond Sea, at Galerie Trois Points in Montreal, Quebec!
I just gave you $1,000,000. Quick, what do you do with it!
I'd like to go on a very long road trip across up, down and across North America in a super luxury RV with wifi and unlimited bandwidth.
Best way to spend a day off?
These days it's usually drinking tea, responding to neglected emails and watching an entire season Top Chef in one sitting.

Last Friday THIS, Los Angeles gallery presented Turbo Lover, a solo show from artist, printmaker, and painter Thom Lessner (Philadelphia) whose known for his 80s pop culture paintings and wood cutouts. Not only has he designed and printed various rock school posters for Paul Green School of Rock Music, but he has also done work for Enjoi, Snickers, Toyota, Thrasher, Vice just to mention a few. If your'e a fan of music, metal, and styling mullets like I am, then you should go check out Turbo Lover which runs from Sept 28th thru Oct 19th at THIS, LA in Highland Park. Types of Boob

Just thought I would inform you all that I got bored this summer (briefly) with cross hatching my arm off and drew some boobs on a tee-shirt. It is an adaptation from a design I saw my Dad wearing when I was younger.
If anyone would like some boobs on there chest as a tee-shirt let me know and I will note your order. They come in small, medium and large and will be screen printed and sold at £20 a shirt, made by me on high quality tee shirty jazz. -Mr. Mead

San Francisco, CA -- FFDG is pleased to present San Francisco based artist Mike Giant in his first solo show with the gallery entitled "Confessions of an Old Dirty Skateboarder" featuring a wide assemblage of recent drawings and also a rare opportunity to view Giant's personal collection of skateboards he illustrated the graphics for, including boards from his early career. There will be an opening reception for the show on Friday, July 20th (7-10pm). The artist will be present. Beer and wine will be available.
"I'm a product of my generation. I grew up through the 80s and was drawn to the punk rock and hip-hop cultures simultaneously", Giant said in a recent interview. "I threw myself in headfirst. A lot of those things were about personal expression, and also an anti-establishment attitude like, "We don't need you, we have our own thing." That's the backbone of who I am to this day".
San Francisco based Mike Giant has achieved fame as a graffiti artist, illustrator and tattooist. Black ink is Giant's specialty and whether his medium is concrete, paper or skin, his signature style - inspired by Mexican folk art and Japanese illustration - is unmistakable. Mike Giant has worked in media covering, graffiti, design, fine art, photography and tattooing, making him one of the most celebrated and versatile artists of his generation. He has shown in galleries around the world.

Preview of Jeremy Fish's Show Opening Sat

 Last night we swung through Ffity24SF in the Lower Haight for a preview of Jeremy Fish's show "Where Hearts Get Left" which opens this Saturday, July 14th (5-9pm) here in San Francisco, Ca.
The show is Fish's ode to all that that makes San Francisco... San Francisco. He illustrates his favorite lores and legends like how the Native Americans believed that the Earth and subsquently San Francisco was created by a silver-fox and coyote as they danced in the Bay Area's constant dense fog... or how a pair of giant grumpy battling turtles under the Earth's crust cause our earthquakes.
Approx 50 14" x 17" drawings take you on a tour of the special San Francisco-centric things that make the city so special to Fish. From the Mission's best burrito spots to SF's first notable quirky self proclaimed Imperial Majesty Emperor Norton I, Fish illustrates not the obvious tourist highlights, but those little things that take a decade of discovery to find and appreciate.
My favorites include the collage of the best under the radar, not your fancy burger jams including my all time favorite, Hamburger Haven on Clement. Let's not forget the group of Native American activists who occupied Alcatraz for 19 months in the late 60s... or that like the city itself is always in a constant state of change (sometimes for the worse), but that, like the Vapor Room R.I.P. (for now), even good things come to an end and out of the ashes, the phoenix will rise.

GATHER collects a series drawings of nets by Grand Rapids-based printmaker Todd Freeman. These deceptively simple pen and ink drawings are a careful examination of the formal qualities of industrial nets used for a variety of applications.
In GATHER, Freeman creates a portrait gallery for an iconic craft; illustrating how a simple form can be abstracted to fit so many different needs - each with their own story to tell.

We swung through the home and studio of San Francisco based artists Kelly Tunstall and Ferris Plock. The married couple are putting the finishing touches on the work for their upcoming food-centric show Edible Complex opening at FFDG on Friday, June 22nd (7-10pm). We spoke of San Francisco's love affair with food, got into their working practices, saw what makes them tick and how they keep up with their lively 2 year old son, Brixton while enjoying a couple Coronas.

Your upcoming show at FFDG, opening on June 22nd, focuses a lot on San Francisco's intense food culture. How do you guys, as a family, fit in? Do you eat out a lot?
Ferris: Well... we order a lot of food in... Having a 2 year old with an attention span of 10 seconds means that when we eat out, we often eat
in shifts... We eat a lot in Japantown because our son Brixton really loves to run around there and he loves to eat sushi.
Kelly: We also have a very unique place that we're coming from- being kind of insiders and outsiders of the food bit at this point in our lives. I love so many places, and we've been lucky to be tangentially and directly involved in many efforts.
It's truly a special occasion that we're out for dinner together- and frankly, we're more often grabbing food from a truck at events and
stuff, but yeah- a little more out of the loop than I used to be, so it's interesting to see how eating in the Bay Area has shifted in focus and intensity in just the last five years or so.
Do you think San Franciscans are too focused on food?
Ferris: I think everybody is focused on food because we all die if we don't eat.
However, I feel like I have seen enough photoblogs of peoples' food to last me a life time.
Sometimes I feel like our food culture renaissance is a bit like couture... It is based more on concept and pushing the outrageous and less on consumption. Isn't weird there is a cupcake store downtown that puts cupcakes in its windows to show their outrageous culinary inventions... but no one ever eats them? They all get thrown out?

LOS ANGELES, CA: New Image Art gallery's latest exhibition "The Goblin Universe" featuring the works of Matt Furie (SF) and Michelle Devereux (TX) opened Saturday, June 2, 2012. Furie returns to New Image Art with new colored phantoms, monster sluts, to other mythical creatures which shown along side the color penciled and airbrushed works of artist Mchelle Devereux's "Dudes on Pizza" series something you don't want to miss. We were there to check out the opening but The Goblin Universe runs through July 7th.

San Francisco based photographer, Michael Jang, who's been shooting for decades and who has captured some great shots over the years (Reagan and Frank Sinatra is a good one) turned his camera on his family while growing up in the suburbs in the 70s. An intimate portrait of a Chinese-American family inside their Pacifica home living their lives. Sounds benign, which it is, but what also makes the images fascinating.

| Michael Garlington & The Metaphysical Fundraiser at 111 Minna
Although I missed the opening of Northern-California photographer Michael Garlington's newest show, Constructed Realities, I was fortunate enough to see the work still up during the Metaphysical fundraiser a couple weeks back at 111 Minna. Metaphysical fundraiser, an auction to benefit Wayne Ernzer. --- The ghoulish photographs in their heavy, hand-made frames are reminiscent of photos from the old west, and the glass crucifixes, complete with fetuses and guns, emphasize the accumulated time within the works themselves. Whether you're looking at the frames, the photos, or both, this show deserves a visit, and a walk through the golden archway Garlington constructed around the front door.

| John Felix Arnold III in Japan (Part 3)

| ARYZ at Fifty24SF
ARYZ (Spain) opened his newest gallery show at Fifty24SF last Friday and, if you live in the Bay Area, you need to go. This dude can obviously paint, and he doesn't need an entire building to show his impecable skill. The show has lots of small works on paper which contrast his highly-defined line work to his hard-edged painted objects. The contrast between the hard and soft was the most striking thing to me about his work, since I had never seen it in person before, and the washes blend with the thick paint seamlessly. The show also contains a larger work on canvas, a huge head suspended in the back of the room, and a big wood sculpture of a wolf figure. This diversity in such a small space was impressive, and those of us that went to the opening even got to meet the man in person. If you didn't make it out this weekend, check it out before May 31st when it closes and these works will be off to some very happy new homes.

Water McBeer is please to announce its latest exhibition "Precious" a solo exhibition by David Bayus (April 6 - May 4, 2013) -- David Bayus born 1982 holds his BFA from the Savannah College of Art and his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. David lives and works in San Francisco and is a founding member of the basement collective. This will be his first exhibition with the world renown Water McBeer Gallery highlighting his most recent achievements with paint and digital media. David Bayus will be exhibiting 5 relatively large-scale mixed media works along with a collaborative object featuring Hungarian sculptor H.R KOONS.

| Hard Time Mini Mall @The Shooting Gallery
The Shooting Gallery handed over the reins to the Red Truck Gallery (a New Orleans based gallery) which curated their new show, Hard Time Mini Mall and opened the it on Saturday night. This is my favorite show (so far) in the Shooting Gallery's new space and was packed full of art, a mini bar, and cowhide rugs. The Red Truck Gallery chose works with clear craftsmanship and it was easy to see in Ian Berry's denim assemblages and Chris Roberts-Antieau's awesome quilts. The space was completely packed, making it hard to see each piece individually, but this show deserves a second trip anyway. I look forward to spending more time with the chandeliers, automatons, and paintings before the show comes down on May 4th.

| Recent Works by David Lyle
Working from found photographs, Lyle's paintings are created through a reductive painting process where each piece is rendered using only black paint and turpentine. Lyle begins this process by priming a panel with white gesso. He then paints a thin, rich, oily black veneer over the primed panel, slowly and systematically developing his images by removing some of the black paint with a cloth. In doing so, Lyle renders layer upon layer of various values of black paint resulting in his signature-style of luminescent works.

| Skewville & Mark Warren Jacques @White Walls (SF)
Two twin brothers from Brooklyn, Skewville brought the fun to their opening at White Walls last Saturday night with their new show, Amusement. After all, you can't take a show that starts with a sign reading "Sucks either Way" too seriously. Besides the simplistic yet detailed paintings, visitors got to ride on a bike-powered merry-go-round and throw bean bags at bottles like a carnival game. Even the works made of found materials, like the Battleship boombox and the suitcase made of tin lunch pails, brought a sense of humor to the night. After seeing the work in the back of the gallery, which was much more crowded, Skewville provided a light-hearted atmosphere in which viewers could drink beer, play games, and see some really great artworks.

| The Yok & Sheryo
Brooklyn based artists Sheryo and The Yok recentely completed the mural "Pipe Dreams" in Long Island City at 5 pointz. The Yok also emailed over some photos fom a recent trip to Mexico for the Festival Anonymous held near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico from this past January... Awesome, we're heading to Mexico in a couple weeks.
