Stopped by Eleanor Harwood Gallery Saturday night to see the new solo show from St.Louis, MO based artist Jesse Thomas.
Just as the title of his show points out, cerulean is a recurring theme in all the works. For the most part it reoccurs in the clothing. It also suggests a brigade, that all these individuals dressed in blue are organized for some particular purpose.
Interesting read about how Jackson Pollock's drip paintings not only work with physics, but physics are essentially a co-creator of the works. The lasting appeal of the works due to reflecting fractal geometry that shows up in clouds and coast lines.
Jackson Pollock, famous for his deceptively random-seeming drip paintings, took advantage of certain features of fluid dynamics years before physicists thought to study them.
“His particular painting technique essentially lets physics be a player in the creative process,” said physicist Andrzej Herczynski of Boston College, coauthor of a new paper in Physics Today that analyzes the physics in Pollock’s art. “To the degree that he lets physics take a role in the painting process, he is inviting physics to be a coauthor of his pieces.” ~read on

On display will be 11 beautifully crafted oil paintings which are the next chapter of Los Angeles based Shawn Barber's "Doll Series". The "Doll Series" is Barber's response to living in a world consumed by popular culture. To Barber, it's been abundantly clear what motivates many young people in America especially since Barber has moved to Los Angeles two years ago to focus not only on his painting but to also open Memoir Tattoo with girlfriend Kim Saigh. With "Youth of Today", the "individual" personalities are saturated with a common ground- repetitive sadness fueled by the projected facade of synthetic surreality.
Shawn Barber's body of work focuses primarily on painting, portraiture, and documenting contemporary tattoo culture. Barber's intimate renditions of tattooed individuals balance both meticulous brush strokes and loose energy. Figurative in nature, these large paintings take on abstractions with explosive colors, meandering lines and paint dripping down the canvas.
Shawn earned his B.F.A from Ringling College of Art in 1999 and has paintings held in private collections throughout the United States, Canada, Asia, Europe and Australia. His paintings have been exhibited in diverse solo and group venues including: The Joshua Liner Gallery, NYC, NY; Billy Shire Fine Arts, Los Angeles, CA; The Shooting Gallery, San Francisco, CA; Mesa Contemporary Arts Center, Mesa, AZ; University of Houston, Houston, TX. His first published book of art titled 'Tattooed Portraits' was published by 9mm Books in 2006, followed by his second tome, 'Forever and Ever', a 256 page hardcover book dedicated to the Tattooed Portraits Series. Shawn is currently working on a third book in the Tattooed Portraits Series with Last Gasp Books, to be released in July 2012. Among his extensive achievements, he has taught drawing, painting and the business of art for 10 years at various art schools throughout the country. After years of documenting the art of tattoo, it was a logical progression to pick up the tattoo machine and add tattooist to his resume.

Travel, train hoping, spiritualism, murals, paintings, and this summer he'll be traveling across the US on an artistic and spiritual project under the title Crystal Eyes.

I'm Nick Mann, I live and work in Oakland, CA when I'm not traveling. I'm
currently 23 years old.
RD: Can you describe your path to being an artist? When did you really get
into it?
I got into visual art through playing music and growing up in the Pacific
Northwest. I've been playing guitars since I was 10. Painting has
channeled some of the same creative visions/moods that I previously
expressed through music. After I had slowed down my post-high school
musical output, I wanted to change my creative process. Painting and
drawing both indoors and outdoors gave me room to breathe artistically. I
really got into making visual artwork probably around the age of 19.
RD: Describe your ideals and how they manifest in your work.
My ideals are to live a balanced, well-traveled life in harmony with our
universe and mother earth. I think that it's important to let our creative
visions grow and be open to change. When we put a block on these visions or
translate them into symbols of what's hip and safe, problems arise within
our souls. My work is made through a process of intuition and mistakes.
Through this intuitive process, each piece has potential to develop and grow
on its own. Once I finish a piece, I look at it as a manifested symbol of
my subconciousness at any specific moment or phase in my life. Upon the
completion of a piece, I am also able to rationalize its meaning and
relevance to our universe. The best art speaks a universal language that
communicates to beings of every culture in and out of this world. A
balanced, holistic life is contingent on listening to our subconscious side
while coupling it with rational insight. This dichotomy is illustrated
universally with Lunar (female) and Solar (male) energies.
RD: Is music a part of your studio time? What do you listen to?

Los Angeles, CA: Last Saturday June 11, artist Marco Zamora’s New Works opened at the POVevolving Gallery in Chinatown, Los Angeles. The opening reception ran from 6 pm to 10 pm. We arrived around 9 pm, but there were still lots of folks in the gallery checking out Marco’s beautifully detailed pieces. The show runs from June 11 to July 9th.
My work is about contrasts, both in technique and subject matter. Insistingly trying to assimilate happiness, violence and symbolism within each image. I often use both large and small brushes, toggling between faster and more concentrated painting sessions.
Influences?
I love the playfulness of Asger Jorn, Martin Kippenberger, Picasso and Jeff Koons. The light of Turner and William Hammershøi. The patience of Elina Merenmies. The fleshiness of a Lucien Freud. The energy of a Throw Up or Molinex. The eclecticism of Wim Delvoye. Kristian Bust, when he points out things in a Martin Parr photograph that I did not see before. Old ornaments. Philip Guston's colors, Paul McCarthy's shapes, or Greyson Perry's textiles. Tal R's arrogance, the secrecy and conceit of graffiti - and Katharina Grosse when she paints everything with her huge spray can.
Last night we swung through Jeremy Fish's North Beach studio to have ourselves a look see at his current show before it's crated and shipped out to NYC for the June 23rd opening at Joshua Liner Gallery.
Instead of creating works on what's clicking around in Fish's own head, he gathered a list of artists, skateboarders, rappers, athletes, a stripper, a cop, and a historian whose funny, heartfelt, insanely interesting stories he would record and then illustrate.
The stories run from murder, fights, embarrassing situations, and one focused on a drugged out Keith Haring and some mural drama at a South of Market gay club in the 80s. 30 pieces of work and 30 stories to be heard. The gallery show will feature headphones next to each work where you can hear people like Snoop Dog recount a crazy childhood story involving him pulling a worm out of his pants. Or maybe you wanna hear from Ron English tell a tale from the early Billboard Liberation days.
We'll have more videos next week. In the meantime, let's figure out what's in a hard working artist's fridge... It may surprise you.

Ian Shults' (Austin, TX) paintings forge fine art and the profane to tell sordid tales of debauchery with a sly sense of humor. His paintings recall a bygone era when the sheen of the American Dream dulled, and subversive behavior of illicit drugs and kinky benders were swept under the rug.
Ian emailed over a few recent paintings that feel more painterly than his earlier works that resonated a bit of a found photograph broken down in Photoshop feel. Nice direction with the newer works, Ian. Dig it.

How would you describe your work to someone?
I do not want to explain anything special to anyone through my abstract works. I ask the viewer to interpret everything the way they want and in their own way. As for experienced viewers, I am interested in their criticism of visual elements.
Influences?
There are too many, and I do not know where to start with the listing. I am afraid I could confuse someone if I mention only a few that come to my mind right now. Lately, I admire new Chinese artists. They are great. There are, certainly, young American artists who are leading, then Europeans, and others – Asians, Korean, Indian... At my age, for me, younger artists are maybe a little better model than older ones. It is hard to explain why is that so.

How would you describe your work to someone?
I would say that "They are dirty-Disney colored paintings from a tingling, nintendo-influenced dimension." I would mention that they speak to some 70's warped, screwball, acid-shit. Ominous things have always attracted me, and they show up in my work often.
Inevitably, I paint a lot of the Midwest too, but in a way like you'd discover a rained-on, muddy care-bear in someone's backyard that their Doberman was chewing on. Mystical and disturbing things attract me and I try to harness them with paint.

Some artists- Allison Schulnik, Jose Lerma, Kim Dorland, Chris Johanson, Matthew Barney, Christopher Wool, Carroll Dunham, Luis Galvez, Santiago Cucullu, Terence Koh, Basquiat, George Condo…and many more....

William Emmert, who we interviewed last year, emailed over a few of his newer works we wanted to share with you. William moved down to San Francisco last year from Seattle and has shown his work around town. These works are remakes of posters or other items from his childhood bedroom.

How would you describe your work to someone?
Given up on that . . I’d whip out my iPhone and show them . . . A picture paints a 1000 words, and all that.
Influences?
I’m self taught. So much has influenced how/what I paint . . The Transglobe Expedition opened my eyes to solitude and vast landscapes then Yves Tanguy showed me how endless a background can be on canvas. . Vermeer and his peers got my full attention with their eye for detail and precision, Dali made me drool, Max Ernst told me to experiment, but Odd Nerdrum is the Master . . . my art GOD. But influences are everywhere.

Working routine? Music? Time of day?
Up daily at 7am, in the studio by 9.30 and then look and see what I want to work on most. On a good day I can work till 9pm . . on a normal day I wind down around 6pm. Pretty much paint 7 days a week when working towards a show. Love painting in daylight.
I prefer to have about 6 paintings on the go (Unless working on a major large piece) I’m a mood painter and a bit of a butterfly.
Can’t paint without my music . . it creates a cocoon for me to work within and sets and nurtures my mood. Always start with something slow . . .Koop, David Sylvian, Enigma, Lee Oskar, Software, Air, Thievery Corporation etc
Lately I’ve been starting with Koop every morning and when the day grows old, get onto more motivating tunes . . . Steely Dan or Ziggy Stardust for a final push. I have about 2,000 Cds ranging from classical to punk . . so never stuck for good vibes.

This piece’s completion seems especially timely in regards to the passing of Gerard Smith. Seeing so many friends dealing with such grief has been almost unbearable. Today I just wanted to tell every friend I had that I loved them and was there for them if they needed me. I can’t help but reflect on my own life and wonder if I’ve truly become a good person as a result of all that I’ve learned and experienced in my 35 years on Earth. My personal interactions with other human beings are often tinged with cynicism, sarcasm, insincerity, all as a result of my own character flaws. I wonder what would be said about me, what memories people would have of me if I were to die tomorrow? I hate to turn the tragedy of others into my own vain worries, but these thoughts are unavoidable. I believe that there is so much potential good in all people, that there is so much that can still be done in this life to make things better for all creatures. I want my actions to only contribute to the betterment of mankind, yet so much of my time is spent frivolously and selfishly. I have always been aware of my mortality, that everything could end in an instant, and I always hear that ticking in the recesses of my mind, the hands of a clock slowly but surely running out of numbers, and still I cannot say that I’ve spent my life interacting positively with others. At what point do I start to truly believe that I AM good, that when it all comes down to what I’ve done with my time, when it’s all laid out before me neatly and orderly, I’ll look at my life and know that I did the right things? -Matt Relkin

Tucker Nichols emailed over this Whole Foods poster (below right) which looks a lot like one of Corey Arnold's photos (bottom left). Coincidence? Where they inspired by Corey's photo? Did Corey actually shoot the photo? Who knows and Corey is fishing for salmon right now (like this), so we can't ask him to find out.
Yeah, bad tattoos are basically a bummer, right? But they're also pretty much a rite of passage for bored and disenfranchised-feeling teenagers the world over. At least it was for about 95% of the people I know. Going to a reputable tattoo shop and getting a wizard or unicorn drilled into your lower back is totally fine, but nothing really takes the place of sitting around with a bunch of friends and some beers, enthusiastically taking turns poking each others' arms full of bad ideas-which actually is fun at any age.
OAKLAND -- First Fridays is hoping Oakland hasn't seen the last of the one of a kind event... The street art party is free to attend, but organizers say with police and other costs the price tag to throw the monthly party is $20,000... The City of Oakland has been footing the bill for months and after kicking in $500,000, it's pulling the plug... Organizers are now asking for donations and developing a vendor fee schedule to try and keep the party alive. ~continue reading

A disputed Banksy graffiti artwork removed from a gritty London neighbourhood has sold for approximately $1.1 million US at auction. The provocative Slave Labour (Bunting Boy) sold at a private auction held by concierge firm The Sincura Group at the London Film Museum on Sunday, according to Bloomberg news service. SAN FRANCISCO --- Local painter Ian Kimmerly opened his newest show Continuous Wave at Dolby Chadwick on Thursday night, and these are some of the best paintings I've seen in a while.

Spoke Art opened The Black Robe on Thursday night, with the work of Barron Storey, Mike Dringenberg and Keita Morimoto, and was curated by Eidolon Fine Arts.
These days New York-native multimedia artist, Michael Alan, has been incredibly active artistically in the big city. Between staging hours-long Living Installations at the New Museum and other DIY spaces, exhibiting his drawings and paintings in group exhibitions and hosting an unusual solo show in the home of his mother, Alan proves that there is no rest for the wicked. I caught up with him recently to hear the latest, the backstory, and what's next.
Henrik Haven, who keeps us up to date in all that's Copenhagen, emailed over some photos from the Viborg International Billboard Painting Festival that's running throughout June. In this short installment he introduces us to the work of urban/graffiti artist and illustrator NYCHOS.

Mexico City based Curiot, whose sold out solo show Age of Omuktlans ran last March at FFDG, just finished this great mural entitled "El Retorno de Akhankutli" in Mexico. He recently completed one in Berlin too which we'll be posting in the coming week. The guy is very very talented in our eyes.
This made our day. Not only do we love pizza but we also love Henry Gunderson... So a board shapped like a hot slice designed by Henry Gunderson for The Good Company, well... this writer needs to go for a slice right now.
Wendell McShine (lives in Mexico City, from Trinidad) opened his newest show, Raccoon's Law, at Fifty24SF on Saturday night. ARYZ was a tough act to follow, but McShine held his own in the space... With a combination of a mural, a video, and both drawings and mixed-media works on paper, the diversity of this solo show was impressive. The Raccoon drawings were especially attractive as the way he executed them looked like they actually had fur coming off the page, and you can only imagine how soft it would be to touch. I was lucky to see his work in person through this show, and I hope to encounter more in the future.
Ingrid Wells just got her MFA from The San Francisco Art Institute and these oil paintings from her Honey Boo Boo's Amurrican Starquest were on display as part of the recent MFA exhibition... Ingrid Wells works and lives in San Francisco.
Henry Gunderson emailed over some photos from his recent group show with Andrew Luck, Jordan Bogash, and Mario Ayala "Out The Window" which ran at the Los Angeles based Prohibition Gallery.
I got there the day after the tornado came through. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. My mind just could not grasp what my eyes were seeing. It was just too much to take in, too much to process. So, I did what comes naturally and took images. It sort of helped me separate from the chaos and helped me focus.
Check out this, what could be, one of the longest murals ever created. Hyuro from Valencia, Spain was recently in Copenhagen for the solo show "In/Between" at ArtRebels.
Rachel Ralph spotted Barcelona-based ARYZ working on his mural in the TL a couple weeks back, and we forgot to share the pics. His show at Fifty24SF opened back in April.
Jeffrey Cheung emailed over some photos from a recent one night show he had at Terra Gallery/ event space. The May 19th show also featured live music by Oakland garage rockers Twin Steps and Coldtergeist.

Well, it looks like John Felix Arnold rocked Tokyo with his opening with Koutaro Ooyama at Spes Lab a few weeks back. Even a language barrier couldn't prevent the success of their collaboration. They invited everyone they met on trains, in cars, cafes, bars, restaurants, and people responded by attending, and bringing their families and friends as well.
Last Thursday evening, I was lucky enough to get invited to Nickelodeon's premiere party for their newest cartoon, Sanja & Craig, created by three awesome dudes - Andreas Trolf, Jim Dirschberger, and Jay Howell. Hosted at Tony's Salon with pizza provided by Pizzanistas, the premiere party was filled with libations and celebrations, even a break-dance battle broke out. Congrats to everyone who worked on the show, and especially Trolf, Jim, and Jay who all have been working tirelessly on it. Sanja & Craig premiered Saturday 10:30 am 11 am on Nickelodeon.
