Huey Crowley - Recent Paintings

NYC based painter Huey Crowley, who was in our group show 11.11.11 last year, emailed over some new paintings based on reinterpreted children's fairy tales his grandmother read to him as a child.
Huey writes I chose to reinterpret these stories through my own narrative, and I chose excerpts from my own life to explore them. For example, in the painting "Toad I miss U" I am painting what I think it would be like if someone never listened to these stories or had a role model in their life... what their life would be like if they never had an adult around to read to them, or to care for them. The painting depicts an empty subway, with a homeless person's makeshift home inside. Surrounding the home are messages calling out to find Frog and Toad. The absence of role models can leave one’s life empty.

Dave Kinsey Thurs in NYC

We have a sneak peek of Dave Kinsey's solo show that's opening this Thursday, Dec 13th in NYC at Joshua Liner. Dave's last solo show was here in San Francisco @ FFDG last May.
As the show title suggests, Kinsey attempts to convey a world gone mad with media, perpetual conflict, and a sense of the mounting struggle between the urban and natural worlds. Kinsey creates this new body of work through a brash synthesis of materials, textures, and aesthetics, conjuring multilayered abstractions with traces of figuration which create dynamic transformations of images within images.

We continue checking in on some of the artists participating in our Winter Group Show opening up this Friday, Dec 7th, @FFDG (6-9pm).
We're so pleased to have the acclaimed Dave Kinsey back in our space since his solo show last May (pics). He's set to open his next solo show at Joshua Liner on Dec 13th.
Dave Kinsey's known for his emotionally charged paintings and murals, as well as high-visibility logos and advertising campaigns, including the ubiquitous DC Shoes logo, The Black-Eyed Peas Elephunk album icon, N.E.R.D. "brain", Epitaph Records identity and, most recently, his work with the international Absolut Blank campaign.

I don't really have a set routine, but I tend to get up early and chill in the quiet before getting busy. I prefer to work during the day, but when the heat's on nights are perfect too.

At Dolby Chadwick on Thursday night, a crowd gathered for the opening of John DiPaolo's new paintings. The crowd could be heard down the hallway, immediately after exiting the elevator, you were inclined to go to the gallery even if that wasn't your original destination. The crowd opened up to a divided space where DiPaolo's large paintings were given plenty of room to be enjoyed.

NYC Peoples, get to Tiffany Bozic's opening on Thursday. Beautiful paintings. ~ San Francisco based painter Tiffany Bozic opens the solo show, Transformation, this Thursday, Nov 1st at NYC's Joshua Liner Gallery (6-9pm).
Featuring works in acrylic on maple panel (Bozic's signature surface), Transformation showcases the artist’s meticulous rendering of animal and plant subjects that recasts nature as fable.

Russell Leng | The Diamond Sea

The group show, The Diamond Sea, runs through Nov 10th in San Francisco at FFDG. We've been profiling the artists in the show and we contiue with one of our favorite painters who happens to reside in Vancouver.
Russell Leng is currently living in Edinburgh, UK, pursuing a MFA from Edinburgh College of Art and has been exhibited throughout North America and Europe, and awards include 1st Place Painting Prize from the Surrey Art Gallery, and a BMO Student Invitational nomination. He has been featured in numerous online and print publications including Gestalten, Chronicle, and the Globe and Mail.

C9, Edinburgh. B.A. from Trinity Western University, and currently pursing a M.F.A. from Edinburgh College of Art.
How would you describe your work to someone?
I'm interested in opposites and finding ways to negotiate between them. Inquiries into natural vs. fabricated environments, chance vs. control, and digital vs. firsthand experiences have all been recent investigations that aim to articulate contemporary in-between states I find myself in. In my paintings I have been focusing specifically on the conglomeration of natural and man-made environments melding together through rigid shapes interacting with loose marks.
Influences?
The good ones and the bad ones.
Favorite place traveled?
Toss up between Indonesia and Colombia.

"Corporeal Clusters" @111 Minna

111 Minna never disappoints and Friday night was no exception. Even the uber-corporate crowd, with their glowing ID badges couldn't detract from the quality of the work in their newest show, "Corporeal Clusters" with works from Kelly Allen, Melissa Arendt and Xiau-Fong Wee. The place was packed, as I stepped on more than one shined toe from men's dress shoes, and was filled playing top 40 hits, a weird atmosphere for the gallery. However, the quality of the work is what prevails; there are some really beautiful paintings here.
The show opens with Kelly Allen's photorealistic paintings of animals combined with geometric and biomorphic shapes, setting the tone with a geometric and animalistic thread that runs throughout the entire gallery. Next on inside are Melissa Arendt's paintings on wood panels using geometric shapes and human figures, while letting the grain of the wood compose the background. I was especially attracted to the grouping Clusterfuck Series #s 11, 6, 7, 9, 5. Is that Bowie a la Labrynth I see in the center? Why yes it is, and it made my day. Her next grouping had several works which incorporated glitter, and most of these had been sold by the time I had gotten there at 8:00.
While there is no question of the beauty in both Allen's and Arendt's works, the standout for me were the acrylic paintings on canvas by Xiau-Fong Wee. My god are they beautiful. All I could say (literally) was "wow." The works have amorphous animal/human figures, most of which have the female form, indicating a connection with mother nature. The delicate treatment of the surface of the paintings and the natural aesthetic qualities reminded me of the surreal beauty of Tiffany Bozic's work, but taken to a whole new, dream-like level.
Ultimately, the crowd won the battle of wits, and I just had to get out of there. I will definitely be back before the show closes on November 10th, when I can actually see the paintings, without the soul-crushing music and the creepy businessmen. Really, this show is a must-see, and I guarantee you that you don't want to miss it. -more photos

Tucker Nichols emailed over this Whole Foods poster (below right) which looks a lot like one of Corey Arnold's photos (bottom left). Coincidence? Where they inspired by Corey's photo? Did Corey actually shoot the photo? Who knows and Corey is fishing for salmon right now (like this), so we can't ask him to find out.
Wait, on this Instagram, Corey Arnold writes "Ripped off!", so we guess that's your answer.

Yeah, bad tattoos are basically a bummer, right? But they're also pretty much a rite of passage for bored and disenfranchised-feeling teenagers the world over. At least it was for about 95% of the people I know. Going to a reputable tattoo shop and getting a wizard or unicorn drilled into your lower back is totally fine, but nothing really takes the place of sitting around with a bunch of friends and some beers, enthusiastically taking turns poking each others' arms full of bad ideas-which actually is fun at any age.

OAKLAND -- First Fridays is hoping Oakland hasn't seen the last of the one of a kind event... The street art party is free to attend, but organizers say with police and other costs the price tag to throw the monthly party is $20,000... The City of Oakland has been footing the bill for months and after kicking in $500,000, it's pulling the plug... A disputed Banksy graffiti artwork removed from a gritty London neighbourhood has sold for approximately $1.1 million US at auction. The provocative Slave Labour (Bunting Boy) sold at a private auction held by concierge firm The Sincura Group at the London Film Museum on Sunday, according to Bloomberg news service. The spray-painted, stenciled work depicts a child labourer using an antique sewing machine to create a Union Jack bunting.

Wendell McShine (lives in Mexico City, from Trinidad) opened his newest show, Raccoon's Law, at Fifty24SF on Saturday night. ARYZ was a tough act to follow, but McShine held his own in the space... With a combination of a mural, a video, and both drawings and mixed-media works on paper, the diversity of this solo show was impressive. The Raccoon drawings were especially attractive as the way he executed them looked like they actually had fur coming off the page, and you can only imagine how soft it would be to touch. I was lucky to see his work in person through this show, and I hope to encounter more in the future.

I got there the day after the tornado came through. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. My mind just could not grasp what my eyes were seeing. It was just too much to take in, too much to process. So, I did what comes naturally and took images. It sort of helped me separate from the chaos and helped me focus.

| John Felix Arnold III in Japan (Part 4)
Well, it looks like John Felix Arnold rocked Tokyo with his opening with Koutaro Ooyama at Spes Lab a few weeks back. Even a language barrier couldn't prevent the success of their collaboration. They invited everyone they met on trains, in cars, cafes, bars, restaurants, and people responded by attending, and bringing their families and friends as well.

| Sanjay & Craig Premiere Party (+LA)
Last Thursday evening, I was lucky enough to get invited to Nickelodeon's premiere party for their newest cartoon, Sanja & Craig, created by three awesome dudes - Andreas Trolf, Jim Dirschberger, and Jay Howell. Hosted at Tony's Salon with pizza provided by Pizzanistas, the premiere party was filled with libations and celebrations, even a break-dance battle broke out. Congrats to everyone who worked on the show, and especially Trolf, Jim, and Jay who all have been working tirelessly on it. Sanja & Craig premiered Saturday 10:30 am 11 am on Nickelodeon.
